Rigging and animation

By David on June 5th, 2006

Turner is now rigged (mostly) and set up with the physics-based animation system, so he can walk or run at any speed and in any situation and animate correctly. The screenshots I took really show the motion blur than the animation, but I will set up some animations later!

Wow, fantastic! Hope to see more on this soon.

It’s great to know that you have the animations working. =D
But… as far as the blur goes… is that how it will look in game eventually?
Because if when I have Turner running and all I can see around me is a blur, then how will I be able to differentiate my opponents?

Looks awesome! It’s all really coming together, and I can’t wait to see more. :D

I look forward to the new Lugaru!
The new animation engine will be a lot better than in Lugaru 1.

“at any speed.” I imagined you’d be able to walk or run, but this implies - albeit mildly - the possibility of analog control. Dare I dream…?

These pictures don’t do justice for what this system can do; this stuff looks incredble in person. The motion is so fluid and the control over how Turner moves that David plans is amazing.

@JLrep: Jeff’s UI is planned to have sliders in it which can be used to control characteristics of the way you walk.

Are you using off-the-shelf software for the character animation? If so, which one?

No, the animation system in Phoenix is entirely proprietary, and is based on technology that I have never seen before in other games :)

That motion blur looks amazing, it’s not just a smeared texture, that model is totally warped like a real camera would do.
